He used to hit sixes on the demand of the audience. When Durrani used to step into the ground for batting, the audience started chanting the slogan ‘We Want Sixer’. In the 1960-70s, Durrani was one of the most handsome cricketers of the Indian team. The stadium was packed with the audience to see them. He made his identity in world cricket as an all -round. The specialty of Durrani was that the corner of the stadium from which the voice of the Sixer came, he used to hit a six there. In such a situation, he was an entertainer cricketer who entertained the audience a lot on the field. After his retirement from cricket, Durrani stepped into Bollywood but could not succeed in the film world.
Salim Durrani was born on 11 December 1934 in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. When he was 8 months old, his family came to Karachi from Kabul. Then when the country was divided, his family came to India and settled. He played 29 Tests for India, during which he got a lot of fame. Left -handed batsman Durrani scored 1202 runs in 29 Tests with a century and seven half -centuries. He also used to bowl spin. He took 10 wickets from his spin bowling. In domestic cricket, he scored a lot of runs and wickets. In addition to scoring 8545 runs (14 centuries) at an average of 33.37 in 170 first class matches, he took 484 wickets at an average of 26.09. Durrani’s international cricket figures do not judge his sportsmanship. This explosive batter lost his wickets after being set several times.

Salim Durrani visited the West Indies in 1964. In the fourth Test of the Series, the player played such an unmatched innings which became memorable. At the Port of Spain Test, the host West Indies team scored 444 runs while batting first. India’s first innings in Jawab was piled on 197 runs. India’s defeat was almost certain while playing follow -on. But Durrani showed a living in front of the dreaded bowlers like Wesley Hall, Lance Gibbs and Gary Sobers and played a prized innings of 104 runs in the second innings. With Poly Umrigar (172), the Indian team’s second innings contributed significantly to 422 runs. After this, India gave a target of 176 runs to the West Indies. Which he achieved by losing 3 wickets. But this test is still remembered for the living innings of Durrani and Umrigar.

Salim Durrani played the last Test match in 1973. He was also awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award by the Government of India. After retirement from cricket, he stepped into Bollywood but he could not succeed on the film pitch. He made his debut in 1973 with the film ‘Charitra’ of Bollywood. In this film, Durrani worked opposite Parveen Bobby but this film did not work. Durrani died in Gujarat in the year 2023.
