- ICC may change the point system of the World Test Championship.
- Preparations to give benefit to the team winning the match abroad.
- Afghanistan will not get a place in WTC cycle
New Delhi. The point system may be changed in the next season of the World Test Championship (WTC). This will benefit those teams who win more matches abroad. If everything goes well then the new point system will be applicable from the India-England Test series. The Indian team can also become the first team to take advantage of it. The first series of DubyC 2025-27 cycle between India and England will be played from June this year. The ICC can implement a new rule before this series.
Many major decisions can be taken in the International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting to be held next week. These include two new ball rules in ODIs to changes in WTC Point System. According to the report of England’s newspaper ‘The Guardian’, ICC is considering bringing a bonus point system to DubyC, which will be based on the margin of victory. It is inspired by the point system used in the rugby union. Under this, the points of victory are fixed on the basis of the strength of the opponents. The rule of giving additional marks on winning abroad can also be agreed.
India-England series will be held in June
The World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle will begin with the India-England series in June this year. WTC Finals 2025 will be played between Australia and South Africa at Lord’s just before this series. The current system of the WTC final does not make any difference to win matches in the country or abroad. Currently, 12 are available for victory, 6 for tie and 4 for draw. Many teams are angry with this rule.
Africa benefited from rules
According to this report, the rules have also contributed to South Africa’s WTC to reach the final. The African team made it to the finals without playing against England or Australia. He won the series against West Indies, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. He got the advantage of defeating a relatively weak teams, while he played two series against India, in which there was a draw and in the other he lost.
Single-League format likely to continue
The ICC may currently postpon the plan to divide Test cricket into two divisions. That is, a single-League WTC format can continue. According to the Guardian report, Cricket Australia has proposed to divide the format into two divisions, which have not been kept for voting. This may break the expectations of Afghanistan, Ireland and Zimbabwe in the WTC cycle. Earlier it was proposed that 12 teams of WTC should be divided into 2 divisions by including Afghanistan, Ireland and Zimbabwe.
