New Delhi. The enmity on the cricket field between India and Pakistan is well known. Both teams are considered to be a rival and whenever they are on the field, they are willing to win life for victory. Outside the field, players of both teams have equal respect for each other. Former Pakistani fast bowler Waqar Yunis told a heart touching story of Inzamam-ul-Haq for Mohammad Azharuddin in 1997.
Recalling the incident of an Indo-Pak cricket match of 1997, Waqar said that Inzamam had to listen to the slogans of ‘Aloo, Aloo’. He ignored those slogans, but when someone in the crowd abused about Azharuddin’s wife, the Pakistani batsman lost his temper.
Speaking on ‘The Greatest Rivalry’ podcast, Waqar had said, “Yes, someone was calling him ‘Aloo’. Actually it was that one of the crowd was speaking badly about Azharuddin’s wife-I think he was doing something nonsense-Inzamam did not like it at all. The friendship between these two teams outside the field was a lot of respect.”
“What happened was that someone was commenting dirty about Azhar’s wife. I do not know what happened there in the right. It was not endured by Inzamam and he just decided. I think Salim Malik was the captain (in fact Ramiz Raja was the captain of Pakistan) He asked Salim to send him to the fine-leg-man and asked him to bring him to the 12th player. Got climbed and came down.
After this incident, Inzamam-ul-Haq was reprimanded for this action. The Pakistani cricketer was also banned for two ODIs for a fight with the fan. Inanji also had to go to court but Azharuddin helped to resolve the case outside the court. This was a case for which the fan cannot be forgiven, but nothing is solved by beating. The ICC tries to improve the relationship between the player and the fan.
