New Delhi: Shreyas Iyer may have been dismissed for zero against his old franchise Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday night, but in the low-scoring thriller in Mullanpur, he defeated Punjab Kings by a record 16 runs and made it to the top-four in the points table.
After the match, Shreyas Iyer met KKR CEO Venki Mysore for the first time after a dispute over retention for this season in October last year. Sunil Naren was also present with Iyer. The three veterans were seen talking.
This was Shreyas Iyer’s first match against his old team after separating from Kolkata Knight Riders. You will know that Shreyas was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2022 mega auction. The team finished seventh in 2022.
In 2023, he was out of the entire season due to injury. When he returned in 2024, he was again handed over the captivity by the franchise and he led the team under his leadership to win the IPL trophy after more than a decade.
Despite such a huge success, the Kolkata Knight Riders Manment had surprised everyone by deciding not to retain them before the mega auction last October. However, Mysore later revealed that Shreyas Iyer loved ‘No.1’ of his retirement list. But both separated due to mutual disagreement. This star of India was finally added by Punjab Kings for Rs 26.75 crore in the auction.
Punjab Kings defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 16 runs at their home ground and won the match, while the team was piled on for just 111 runs in 15.3 overs. This is the lowest score defended by any team in IPL history.
